Peshawar is the capital city of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), the North Western Province of Pakistan. It is situated at two-hour drive from the national capital of Islamabad in the Indus valley near the Afghan border. Peshawar is surrounded by Charsadda and Swat in the North, connecting Mardan, Nowshera, and Attock in East, Jamrud, Afghanistan through Torkham border in West and Kohat, Bannu, FATA and Dera Ismail Khan in South.

The traffic generated from these cities includes passenger cars, intercity buses, freight trucks etc. Peshawar serves as the central hub, linking the traffic between M1 and N5 to the Kohat Road which feeds the N55 highway.

Kohat Road is the major southward connecting road having a 2+2 lane configuration with 10 feet lane width and is reduced to 1+1 lane configuration at some locations. The road serves as intercity road between Peshawar and Kohat and also have approaching traffic from the local residential areas situated on both side of the road. The higher amount of traffic cause traffic jams on Kohat road which extends to the Peshawar Ring Road. The current capacity of Kohat Road is insufficient to serve the higher travel demand.

A Bypass road is being proposed which will connect N55 to Chamkani and Kohat. The Bypass road will also have a link from the Peshawar Ring road connecting the traffic coming from Afghanistan and Hayatabad to N55 Highway. The bypass road will share a major portion of the traffic from Kohat road.
